Talk Relationships: consent
A PSHE lesson resource that explores issues around consent and equips students aged 12 to 14 with the knowledge and skills to keep themselves and others safe in their relationships.
About this resource
This lesson from the NSPCC, developed in partnership with the PSHE Association, supports students aged 12 to 14 to explore how consent is communicated and how to respond if they feel uncomfortable or recognise unhealthy behaviour in a relationship.
It forms part of the Talk Relationships series, which helps schools and colleges to deliver inclusive, age-appropriate relationships and sex education.
By taking part in this lesson, students will:
- identify how consent can be communicated both verbally and non-verbally
- explore why everyone has the right to freely give, not give or withdraw consent and that this decision must be respected
- understand that the responsibility lies with the person seeking consent and that consent is an ongoing process.
Further guidance
Due to the sensitive and challenging nature of the topic, the teaching guidance and lesson plan include signposting and suggestions to help staff navigate these conversations in a thoughtful and supportive way. They also provide links to curriculum guidance and support for responding to questions from parents and carers.

This resource is designed for:
