About this resource

This guide from Education Support explores how leaders and managers can support their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of education staff working with learners with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Developed with input from school leaders, SENCOs and SEND experts, the guide considers some of the pressures that education staff supporting learners with SEND may experience. It explores approaches to supporting staff wellbeing, including self-care, the Window of Tolerance and the potential benefits of supervision.

  • school mental health leads

  • senior leaders and leadership teams

  • education staff supporting learners with SEND.

Learning outcomes

This resource addresses the following learning outcomes:

  • Access and utilise tools, strategies and resources to support their own mental health so that they can look after themselves.

  • Share simple evidence-based strategies and exercises with staff and pupils/students to help them manage their mental health and develop their own coping strategies.
