Talk Relationships: preventing gender-based violence

Secondary

A PSHE lesson resource that helps students aged 12 to 14 understand what gender-based violence is, recognise its impact and explore how they can play a role in preventing harmful attitudes and behaviours.

This resource belongs to the resource hub for classroom and wellbeing support.

About this resource

Talk Relationships is a series of PSHE lessons developed by the NSPCC and the PSHE Association, supporting secondary schools to deliver inclusive, age-appropriate relationships and sex education.

This lesson supports students to understand what gender-based violence is and why prevention matters. It explores how peer influence and social norms shape attitudes, and the role schools can play in promoting respect and safety.

By taking part in this lesson, students will:

  • develop an understanding of what gender-based violence means and why preventing it is important
  • explore how peer pressure and the desire to fit in can influence attitudes and behaviours, and consider how to challenge harmful norms
  • reflect on the right to feel safe and consider the steps schools can take to help prevent gender-based violence.

Further guidance

Due to the sensitive and challenging nature of the topic, additional guidance and signposting are included to support staff in navigating sensitive conversations. This also includes links to curriculum guidance and advice for responding to questions from parents and carers.

Using this resource

This resource is designed for:
