Talk Relationships: preventing gender-based violence

Secondary

A PSHE lesson resource that helps students aged 12 to 14 understand what gender-based violence is, recognise its impact and explore how they can play a role in preventing harmful attitudes and behaviours.

This resource belongs to the resource hub for classroom and wellbeing support.

About this resource

This lesson from the NSPCC, developed in partnership with the PSHE Association, supports students aged 12 to 14 to explore what gender-based violence is and why prevention is important. It encourages reflection on peer influence and social norms, and how to safely challenge harmful attitudes and behaviours. The lesson also considers the role schools can play in creating a culture of respect and safety.

It forms part of the Talk Relationships series, which helps schools and colleges to deliver inclusive, age-appropriate relationships and sex education.

By taking part in this lesson, students will:

  • develop an understanding of what gender-based violence means and why preventing it is important
  • explore how peer pressure and the desire to fit in can influence attitudes and behaviours, and consider how to challenge harmful norms
  • reflect on the right to feel safe and consider the steps schools can take to help prevent gender-based violence.

Further guidance

Due to the sensitive and challenging nature of the topic, the Teaching Guidance and lesson plan include signposting and suggestions to help staff navigate these conversations in a thoughtful and supportive way. They also provide links to curriculum guidance and support for responding to questions from parents and carers.
